Sprinkle Some Fairy Dust in Your Life

I discovered this happiness hack several years ago, and it’s been a game-changer. The fear, shame, and depression that once held sway in my life have given way to hope, joy, and confidence.

The hack is simple, not always easy, but powerful. It’s all about finding and sprinkling fairy dust in your day.

The Science Behind Fairy Dust

Studies show that we can train our brains to receive certain emotions and reject others. We can train ourselves to absorb negative emotions-fear, anxiety, defeat-or healthy positive emotions-hope, love, joy, and fun.

One psychologist explains it beautifully: the dendrites in our brains are like branches of a tree. On those branches are leaves. What we allow to rest on those leaves for 24-48 hours trains our brain to receive more of that emotion—and it works for healthy emotions or toxic emotions.

So here’s today’s happiness hack: find and allow fairy dust to rest on the leaves of your mental tree.

What Is Fairy Dust?

Fairy dust is anything that lures you out of bed, adds sparkle to your day, and reminds you that life is good. It comes in all shapes and sizes:

  • That first cup of coffee in the morning-the ultimate motivator.

  • A golf game with friends.

  • Wrapping up a project at work or home-the joy of completion.

  • An evening bike ride, a walk on the beach, or a quiet hike.

  • The first cool front after a long, hot summer.

  • Lunch plans with a friend.

Making It Part of Your Day

Start small-use the everyday things of life to intentionally program happiness into your life.

I like to ask my husband each day, “What was the best part of your day?” Then I share mine. Big or small, thinking about what was good in our days is like sprinkling fairy dust all over ourselves.

Before bed, I often replay the day in my mind, picking out happy moments. I fall asleep with fairy dust on my pillow-and wake up ready to find more the next day.

Sprinkle Some Fairy Dust Today

We can never have too much fairy dust. Those little joys-savoring a morning coffee, completing a task, or spending time with friends-tell our brains to find more happiness in life.

Hoping you find buckets and bunches of fairy dust in your day!
