LETTING GO & STEPPING INTO THE BEAUTIFUL BARE

A late-in-life layoff can shake your identity and sense of purpose—but it can also open the door to new growth, clarity, and freedom. If you’re in a season where things feel bare or uncertain, you might be closer to new growth than you think.

When Life Suddenly Changes

Have you ever felt the ground shift beneath you? One day, life seems steady and predictable, and the next, everything changes. Maybe it’s a job ending, a long-held dream taking a new direction, or retirement arriving sooner than expected. I experienced this just a few months ago when I was laid off from a job I loved and had invested so much of my identity into.

Learning to Stand in the Uncertainty

At first, the unknown felt daunting—like stepping into uncharted territory. But I realized that transitions, while challenging, can also be opportunities for growth and renewal. I thought about high school: a time when life felt certain, until graduation arrived and everything changed. Standing at the edge of a new chapter can feel the same way—uncertain yet full of possibility.

Letting Go to Make Room

One of the things that helped me was the idea of pruning, like a vine dresser cutting back a branch that no longer bears fruit. Letting go of something familiar can feel radical, even painful, but it creates space for new growth. My skills, creativity, and passions didn’t disappear—they were simply redirected toward what’s next.

Carrying Who We Are Into What’s Next

This transition reminded me that my worth isn’t defined by a job title, paycheck, or role. My experience, heart, and passion travel with me into this next season. By closing the old chapter with gratitude, trusting the timing, and walking forward with an open heart, we make space for new adventures.

The next chapter is waiting. It may look bare now, but growth, purpose, and joy are already unfolding—sometimes in ways you could never have imagined.
