Storms Come to Us All

Life has a way of shaking us—sometimes gently, other times with a force that feels like the ground itself is shifting. Whether it’s a relationship strain, financial pressure, a health scare, career pivot, empty nest, or a big transition like retirement, storms come to us all.

The good news? While we can’t stop the storms, we can prepare for them. And preparation makes all the difference in how well we get through.

A Real-Life Lesson from the Oregon Coast

Years ago, my husband and I owned a house on the Oregon coast. From the outside, it looked sturdy and inviting. But beneath the surface, the support pillars—made of old rubble—were quietly failing. We had a choice: ignore the warning signs and hope for the best, or do the hard work to rebuild them before the problem got critical.

We chose to rebuild. And when the winter storms rolled in with 80 mph winds, the house stood strong. That experience became a powerful picture for me of life.

The Importance of Strong Internal Supports

We can look solid on the outside—smiling, busy, “fine”—but if the inner supports are weak, the storms of life can expose them, and cause our world to shake. I've come to rely on six essential pillars that bring stability, balance, and confidence, no matter the weather.

The Six Pillars That Hold Us Steady

These pillars don’t stop the storms, but they hold everything together while the wind howls on the outside—while our hearts are at peace on the inside.

  • Spiritual – Our connection to God, often both challenged and strengthened during a storm.

  • Physical – Caring for our bodies so they can carry us through demanding seasons.

  • Emotional & Mental – Nurturing our hearts and minds to stay resilient.

  • Purpose & Meaning – Knowing why we get up each day, especially vital during transitions like retirement.

  • Relationships – The people who love and support us, often a lifeline when other areas shake.

  • Rest, Fun & Relaxation – The often-overlooked pillar that recharges us for the long haul.

We Repeat What We Don’t Repair

The truth is simple yet profound: “We repeat what we don’t repair.” Weak areas don’t heal by being ignored or pushed through—they grow strong when we give them attention and support (Hebrews 12:13).

Living Fully Alive Through Every Season

A fully alive life isn’t one without storms. It’s one built on solid pillars—where we notice what’s strong, reinforce what’s shaky, and thrive through every season.
